Poll: 4 out of 5 Americans heard of cryptocurrencies

The number of Americans who “have heard at least a little” about cryptocurrencies almost doubled since 2015, but only 16% have invested in digital assets.

The renowned Pew Research Center surveyed 10,000 US residents and found that American awareness of cryptocurrencies grew dramatically over the past five years. According to the survey, 86% of respondents “have heard at least a little about cryptocurrencies.” In 2015, only 48% of respondents answered a similar question in the affirmative.

Nevertheless, not everyone who heard of crypto decided to invest in digital assets. Only 16% reported experience of investing, trading, or otherwise using cryptocurrencies.

Slightly over 10% have heard nothing about cryptocurrencies.

Pew’s survey methodology also provided insight into how people of different genders, age groups, and income levels feel about cryptocurrencies. Thus, Americans aged between 18 and 29 are more actively investing in cryptocurrency than older people. Men used (invested, bought or sold) cryptocurrency twice as often as women.

High income respondents (from $125,900 per year) are much more likely to have heard “a lot about cryptocurrency” than people with middle income ($42,000 to $125,900 per year) or low income (less than $42,000 per year).
