75-year-old entrepreneur John McAfee, a bitcoin enthusiast who promised to eat his penis if bitcoin does not rise in price to $500,000, was found dead in a Catalan prison. He was awaiting extradition to the United States.
John McAfee was found hanged in his cell at Brians 2 Prison in Barcelona. In the morning, he was told that the Spanish court approved his extradition to the United States, where he is accused of tax evasion.
The prison guards, who found him hanged in his cell, and doctors, according to the Spanish Ministry of Justice, tried to help him, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The eccentric entrepreneur known as the creator of the anti-virus program was arrested on October 3, 2020 at El Prat airport as he was about to fly to Turkey. The arrest was made through Interpol at the request of the United States, which accused McAfee of tax evasion for millions of dollars on income allegedly derived from cryptocurrencies.
The investigation by the US Attorney’s Office alleges that McAfee evaded paying out millions of dollars by promoting cryptocurrency projects and selling the rights to publish his biography between 2014 and 2018. According to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the businessman used Twitter to promote crypto projects among his followers, without disclosing that he was receiving money for advertising. He is believed to have earned $23 million (€19.5 million) through these deals.
McAfee claimed that the reason for his arrest was politically motivated for his belligerence against the US tax system, which McAfee considered corrupt.
McAfee regularly stated that he did not feel safe and that the US government was plotting a conspiracy against him. McAfee was a friend of Jeffrey Epstein, a billionaire businessman accused of human trafficking and sexual exploitation and found hanged in a prison in the United States.
On October 15, 2020, when McAfee was already taken into custody, he tweeted: “I am content in here. I have friends. The food is good. All is well. Know that if I hang myself, a la Epstein, it will be no fault of mine.”
