Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk said the electric car maker is now accepting bitcoins as a payment method.

Elon Musk tweeted that now those who want to buy a Tesla electric car have another payment method. “You can now buy a Tesla with Bitcoin,” announced Musk.

“Tesla is using only internal & open source software & operates Bitcoin nodes directly,” Musk added in the next tweet. “Bitcoin paid to Tesla will be retained as Bitcoin, not converted to fiat currency.”

Musk’s official announcement followed a wave of social media posts in which users said they spotted bitcoin on the list of available payment methods at Tesla stores in the United States.

Musk explained that for now, Bitcoin payments are only available for purchases in the United States.

“Pay by Bitcoin capability available outside US later this year.”

The Block tested the possibility of paying for electric vehicles using bitcoins. Based on the payment details, Tesla generates different Bitcoin addresses for each order. Payment must be made in one tranche.

The company’s electric vehicles typically cost between $37,990 and $124,000 before tax.

Tesla said in February that it had invested $1.5 billion in bitcoin in January as part of its treasury management strategy.
