Coin ATM Radar: bitcoin ATM installations slow down

Within the first two months of 2022, 1817 bitcoin ATMs were installed in the world. Last year, over the same period, 2,435 crypto machines were launched.

The number of installed crypto ATMs in the world continues to grow, but the pace of this growth in 2022 slowed down significantly. In January and February 2022, 618 less crypto ATMs were installed than in the same period in 2021.

At the same time, the pace is still at a high level. For comparison: 760 bitcoin ATMs were installed in January and February of 2020, and only 250 bitcoin ATMs were launched during the first two months of 2019.

One of the main reasons for the slowdown in growth is the lack of new jurisdictions with friendly cryptocurrency legislation. North America remains the leader by the number of installed bitcoin ATMs (95%). The US accounts for 88% of all machines (more than 32,000) operating in the world.

In Europe, the distribution of bitcoin ATms is more even. Spain became the leader with 182 crypto ATMs installed, followed by Switzerland and Austria with 141 and 130 bitcoin ATMs, respectively.

The main growth in the number of bitcoin ATMs coincided with the second half of 2020 and 2021. If on July 1, 2020 there were 8640 bitcoin ATMs in the world, then by January 1, 2021 their number reached 14,031, and by January 1, 2022 there were 34254 crypto ATMs on the planet.
